Well over a decade and a half after their first iconic release, the traditional colour blocking of the Nike SB Dunk ‘Rayguns’ has been reworked in a tie-dye pattern that pays homage to SB’s iconic VP of Creative Products Sandy Bodecker. Seen here in the black ‘Home’ colourway, dark overlays of leather surround the toe box and run up through to the eyestays. Lateral panels add bursts of the original orange and yellow tones and a tie dye pattern over the top of a white backdrop, cut through by a black swoosh which joins at the heel. The white is matched by the laces and outsole as well as over the detailing on the woven label on the iconic ‘fat-tongue’, on which a ‘58’ can be found on the reverse. The ‘Raygun’ name references the small embroidered extra-terrestrial armed with two ray guns by the lateral heel.
Dunk’s reimagined what a skate-shoe was meant to be, the extra padding added to the tongue and collar provides generous support as well as ensuring comfort throughout a long day of skating. Perforations along the vamp and mesh detailing helps improve breathability. The Zoom Air unit can be found in the sockliner, allowing for responsive cushioning whether you’re on the board or paying homage to the shoes basketball history on the court. Finally a multi-directional herringbone patterning across the outsole generates traction.
Sandy Bodecker is credited with making Nike SB what it is today, he spearheaded the subsidiary in its earliest days and designed the most iconic releases from the golden era of Dunk - of which the Raygun is one. It is this re-imagined version, which still attributes the best parts of the 2005 release, that pays respect to the late and great Bodecker.
